Call for Applications Summer School on “Way and Being”(TÜBIngen, Germany) August 24–29, 2026

Way and Being: Between Daoist and Presocratic Approaches is a summer school
designed for students engaged in or interested in research opportunities within the
constellation of Chinese, Greek, and German philosophy of Way and Being. The
program includes presentations and discussions led by invited speakers on related
topics. Additionally, students will have the chance to share and discuss their ideas with
peers and speakers.
This summer school aims to foster philosophical and critical engagement by
facilitating dialogues between ancient Chinese and Greek sources within the context
of contemporary philosophical discourses, focusing but not limited to those
influenced by Martin Heidegger’s Way of thinking. We encourage discussions and
research that go beyond cultural clichés and agendas, approaching classical studies
with an attentiveness to modern reconstructions of ancient texts in both Chinese and
Greek traditions.
The encounter between early Chinese and Greek thought invites reflection on
how each tradition articulates the relationship between Way and Being. Parmenides’s
theory of Being, for instance, is also a theory of the way or ways: it raises the question
of whether there is only one way of being, or also a second way of non-being, or even
a third way between the two. Comparable questions have also shaped modern
Western and Chinese interpretations and translations of the Daoist classic Laozi 老子,
which has often been read as a philosophy of Way. “Way” (dào 道 or odos οδός) opens
up far-reaching and still little-explored approaches to Chinese and Greek philosophy.
These approaches include, among others, a systematic dialogue between the two
traditions through the theme of walking, wandering, and journeying.
This summer school continues the discussions of two previous meetings: one
at the Free University of Berlin (July 2025), also titled “Way and Being: Between Daoist
and Presocratic Approaches,” and another at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou (August
2025), titled “Philosophies of the Way: Laozi, Heraclitus, Parmenides, and Readings of
Heidegger.” The aim of this third meeting is to prepare the publication of two special
issues in 2027: “Way and Being: Between Daoist and Presocratic Approaches” (Asian
Studies, Ljubljana) and the joint special issue “Walking, Wandering, and Journeying:
Approaches from Chinese and Greek Thought” (Religions and Philosophies).

How to Apply
To facilitate in-depth exchanges and discussions, the summer school will be limited to
20 graduate students with the oportunity to present their work. Interested
participants should send their applications (CV and abstract) to Niels Weidtmann
(niels.weidtmann@cof.uni-tuebingen.de) by March 31, 2026. Admission will be
confirmed by April 30, 2026.

We are pleased to share information about an upcoming summer school hosted by the Department of Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. The course will focus on dialectical thought in Asian philosophies and cultures. It is co-organized by the Ferdinand Augustin Hallerstein Sinological Research Center (SRC) in Slovenia and the European Association for Chinese Philosophy (EACP).

CfP: Symposium: Intersections of Ethics and Aesthetics (December 16–17, 2025, University of Málaga)

We are pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the I Ǝ&E Symposium: Intersections of Ethics and Aesthetics, which will be held on December 16–17, 2025at the University of Málaga.
The relationship between ethics and aesthetics has been an inexhaustible source of reflection throughout the History of Philosophy. In recent decades, both spheres have once again converged and blurred their boundaries, leading to exciting new developments in both fields.
This renewed entanglement has resulted in the development of new subdisciplines that emphasize the intersection between the aesthetic and the ethical. Examples include Yuriko Saito's aesthetics of care (2022) and Marta Tafalla’s environmental aesthetics (2019). Moreover, this convergence is not limited to a simple reunion between the two disciplines, but extends to the analysis of their modes of interaction and the conceptual problems they share, as evidenced in moralism (Carroll, 1996) and aestheticism (Alcaraz León, 2018).
We invite students at all levels, as well as researchers and professionals, to submit contributions that explore the current convergence between ethics and aesthetics, addressing issues such as:

Creation, reception, and communication of ethical-aesthetic values.
The relationship between moral judgments and aesthetic judgments.
Aesthetics and ethics in political and social art.
Feminist art and the aesthetics of resistance.
Ethics, aesthetics, and new technologies.
Embodiment and affect as a meeting ground between aesthetics and ethics.
Transcultural perspectives: ethics and aesthetics in non-Western cultures.
Philosophical theories on the intersection between ethics and aesthetics (aesthetics of care, environmental aesthetics, everyday aesthetics, etc.).
Other topics (please specify when submitting your proposal).

Call for 2029 EACP Biennial Conference location

Call for Conference Proposals: 7th Biennial Conference of the European
Association for Chinese Philosophy (EACP), 2029

In line with its mission to promote academic and scholarly engagement with
Chinese philosophy across Europe, and to foster a platform for fruitful
cooperation and exchange of ideas, the European Association for Chinese
Philosophy (EACP) organizes regular biennial conferences.
The current Board of the EACP invites all members in good standing to submit
proposals to host the 7th Biennial Conference, to be held in 2029.
Proposals (approximately one page in length) should include:
·      The proposed location of the conference (any academic institution in
Europe is eligible);
·      The name and contact information (including email address) of the person
responsible for organizing the event;
·      A brief description of the venue, which should ideally be able to
accommodate at least 150 participants.

Optionally, proposals may also suggest a conference theme and indicate
potential sponsors. The organizer will be responsible for the administrative
management of the conference (i.e., collecting membership fees), while the
Association's Treasurer will collect only the association membership fees.

Theme: “Selfhood and Exteriority”

How should selfhood be described and what is the nature of its relationship with exteriority (other people and beings, the environment as such)? Can the “I” be considered a distinct individual or should it rather be understood as a system of multiple agents? What is the nature of our relationship as “selves” with our society? How responsible are we for our actions vis-à-vis our exterior being(s)? What, if anything, does it mean to be free?
What is, has been, and could be Chinese philosophy’s take on these and other questions relating to selfhood? How have they been tackled throughout the history of Chinese philosophy? What different approaches are found in the various Chinese philosophical schools? What can be learned from Chinese philosophy for improving our adopted ways to approach our world? How can Chinese philosophy engage in meaningful dialogues on such and related issues with other philosophical traditions of the world?
Among suggested topics to be discussed are:

Scholars working on Chinese philosophy and philosophy in China are invited to submit proposals for individual papers or panels to Geir Sigurðsson (University of Iceland), . Topics are not restricted to the conference theme.
Official languages of the conference are English and Chinese.
Abstracts should be no more than 250 words. Panel proposals should include the title and a brief description of the panel and the names, affiliations, email addresses of the participants, and the titles of each participant’s presentation with abstracts of max. 250 words. Panels can be composed of three or four presentations. Each paper presentation has 30 minutes, including discussion.

All contributions have to be submitted by 30 November 2024!

To encourage the participation and inclusion of young researchers, the EACP offers a Young Scholars Award. PhD candidates and early postdoctoral researchers (up to three years after PhD defense) should submit a full paper and indicate that they wish to compete for the award. Up to three winners of the award will receive a certificate and free accommodation during the conference. Additionally, the first prize winner will be awarded the possibility to publish their paper in the now Q1 international academic journal Asian Studies: https://journals.uni-lj.si/as/about.

The conference fee for EACP members is 100 EUR for scholars and 40 EUR for students. For non-members the fee is 140 EUR for scholars and 60 EUR for students.

The 5th biennial conference of the EACP is the middle (second) event of the “European Summer of Chinese Philosophy” in 2025. The first is the 24th International Society for Chinese Philosophy (ISCP) Conference, which will take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, June 20-23 with the theme “Addressing Global Crises and Reimagining Solutions through Chinese Philosophy.” The third event is the 1st Education Network of the European Association for Chinese Philosophy (EN-EACP) Conference at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, July 4-6, with the theme “Mirroring Civilizations: Paths Between Daoist and pre-Socratic Philosophies.”
This sequence offers a unique opportunity for scholars traveling from outside Europe to engage deeply with Chinese philosophy at three closely interconnected events. Participants can explore significant issues related to the influence of Chinese philosophy in the contemporary world while visiting three distinct, geographically, and historically intriguing locations in Europe. Europe, with its vibrant mosaic of cultures, languages, and philosophies, provides an ideal setting for fostering transcultural dialogues between Chinese and Western philosophies. Hence, the 2025 European Summer of Chinese Philosophy, bridging three distinct while fascinating European cultures and environments in Ljubljana, Reykjavík and Berlin, encourages a rich exchange of ideas and philosophical theories, enhancing the potential for meaningful transcultural interactions.

The International Society for Chinese Philosophy invites you to participate in the 24th ISCP conference,
to be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia from Friday, June 20 to Monday, June 23, 2025,
hosted by the Department of Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana.

Topic:
“Addressing Global Crises and Reimagining Solutions through Chinese Philosophy”

The current crises, such as aggressive wars, severe environmental disasters, unequal
distribution of resources, viral pandemics, etc., are global problems that cannot be fully solved
within the narrow framework of individual countries or nation-states. They must also be
addressed within the larger framework of global cooperation and solidarity. Such strategies
require the development of genuine intercultural dialogue, i.e., dialogue that goes beyond the
currently fashionable terminologies and can lead to a truly equal transcultural exchange of
knowledge and ideas. This conference aims to explore both traditional and contemporary
Chinese philosophical perspectives, seeking their contributions towards crafting a new
planetary ethos that emphasizes mutual understanding and practices of solidarity in
confronting these universal challenges.

Submission guidelines and timeline
The conference languages are both English and Chinese.
English abstracts should be 250 to 300 words; Chinese abstracts should be about 500 characters. Abstracts should include paper title, author’s name, affiliation, and email contact information.
Panel submissions (including “Author-Meets-Critics” sessions) should include the topic, panelists and their affiliations, a summary of the proposed panel in 300-500 words (English) or 800-1000 characters (Chinese), and an abstract for each of the papers (250–300 words for papers in English and about 500 characters for papers in Chinese).
Individual paper presentations are 20-25 minutes each. Proposed panels are 2 hours with three presenters.

Communication of acceptance: December 15th 2024
